Revving Up Nostalgia: The Unyielding Evolution of a 1982 Fox Body Mustang into an Autocross Icon

Mike Trenkle, a former motocross competitor, redirected his athletic discipline towards reviving a neglected Fox-body Mustang after injuries ended his riding career. With relentless focus, he transformed it into a top-notch autocross vehicle, dominating in the SCCA and the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge.

The car's evolution began with a major overhaul involving an engine upgrade, braking system enhancement, and suspension improvements, which initially did not meet his expectations. Undeterred, Mike embarked on a meticulous development journey, resulting in a meticulously crafted 363 Windsor engine producing 550 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, with a peak at 7,000 rpm. The Mustang's power is managed through a robust drivetrain including a Centerforce DYAD clutch and a fortified TKO 600 transmission.

However, the heart of this Mustang's transformation lies not in its formidable powerplant but in its handling dynamics. Mike engineered a custom SLA suspension system, an adapted Cobra IRS, and designed a cantilever rear suspension to support the massive 325-section tires. His commitment extended to crafting a carbon body kit, which not only adds an aggressive aesthetic but also reduces the car's weight to 3,206 pounds.

Mike's attention to detail shines through in the suspension setup, incorporating high-quality Penske shocks and a balance of OEM and custom components, leading to a remarkable 51:49 weight distribution. This careful tuning gives the Mustang the ability to corner with the finesse of a mid-engine vehicle, offering a driving experience that rewards assertive handling.

Despite its racing pedigree, the car maintains daily drivability, with an interior that includes fixed carbon Sparco seats, sound insulation, and modern comforts like air conditioning and an updated sound system. This blend of performance and convenience has earned the Mustang accolades at SCCA events, SEMA appearances, and regional autocross championships.

In a parallel recap, the Trenkles' journey to the Holley Intergalactic Ford Festival is highlighted, showcasing their Fox-body Mustang's impressive modifications. Mike's DIY ethos is evident in the car's wide carbon fiber bodywork and self-fabricated suspension components, drawing inspiration from the DTM Mustangs of the early 90s. The car's prowess is put to the test in various competitions by both Mike and his wife, Kelly, proving its mettle on the autocross track, drag strip, and 3S challenges.

This car, with its standout widebody stance and formidable track performance, became a showstopper at the Holley Ford Festival. Its engine bay houses a robust Boss block with a suite of performance parts propelling it to 550 horsepower. The distinctive carbon bodywork is not just for show; it signals the car's competitive nature, a sentiment echoed by its presence at various competitive events, including a striking appearance at the 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. There, nestled in the Optima Street Car Challenge Paddock adjacent to the Westgate Hotel and the North Hall, Mike Trenkle's Fox-body Mustang stood as a testament to his transformation from motocross athlete to automotive craftsman.
